A used floor is not a flat-pack product
Second-hand steel can be valuable, but every new building has different column grids, clear heights, slab conditions, access routes and load requirements. The components must be identified, checked and incorporated into a new engineered layout.
We buy and sell both new and quality used mezzanine floors. The right option depends on available stock, programme, geometry and the amount of modification required. A highly bespoke footprint may be better served by new steel.

What can normally be reused
Main beams, secondary beams, columns, baseplates, stairs and some handrail components may be reusable when their identity and condition are suitable. Decking, fixings, fire protection and edge details often need replacement or redesign.
No component should be assumed to carry a load simply because it performed in another building. The proposed floor still needs structural calculations, drawings and Building Regulations information for its new use.

Where used systems make commercial sense
Used steel works best for straightforward storage platforms, projects with flexible column positions and buyers who can accommodate the available system. It can also help when matching an existing installation or extending a floor built from identifiable components.
The quotation should make clear which parts are used, which are new, what preparation or coating is included, and how the system will be adapted to the new premises.

How to compare used and new quotations
Ask both proposals to deliver the same area, loading, access, edge protection, approval information and finish. A used-steel quote may appear lower because decking, stairs, preparation or missing components have been excluded.
Check whether transport and dismantling are included, whether the system is already in stock, and what happens if components prove unsuitable during preparation. The commercial risk sits in the assumptions as much as the steel price.
Information that should remain with the floor
Keep structural calculations, layout drawings, design loads, component information and approval records. Label loading areas clearly and review the documentation before changing use, adding dense shelving or altering openings.
A future owner or contractor should be able to understand what was designed, what was reused and which components were introduced as new.

Photographs, section sizes, connection details, quantities and any original drawings help establish whether the steel is genuinely reusable.
Receiving building survey
Clear height, columns, slab, services, doors and the required floor shape determine how much of the stock can be incorporated.

New baseplates, beams, stairs, guarding, decking or coatings may be needed to complete a compliant new arrangement.
Programme certainty
Used stock can be economical, but the proposal should explain reservation, preparation and replacement risk before installation dates are promised.
Used components should only proceed once the engineering and commercial assumptions are visible. A transparent hybrid of used and new steel is often more sensible than forcing every old component into the scheme.
